Early Life
Harriet Tubman was born on a plantation in Maryland around 1821. In 1824, she was separated from her father when her mother and siblings were moved to a farm in a nearby village. From the age of five, Harriet cared for her younger brothers and sisters when her mother worked in the master’s home. She was hired out to temporary masters, who were often harsh and uncaring. The grueling conditions she endured made her so sick that she was frequently returned to her owner to recuperate before being hired out again (Bennett, 2005).
